Fannying about with mom’s fanny
This story conjured up a memory from childhood, my mom would rather forget. My sister, who’s now 30, was really impatient in the principal’s office one time. Mom was there for some reason related to one of her other girls and I assure you it had nothing to do with mischief on any of our parts. Anyhow, my youngest sister was about butt-high and used this to her advantage. There mom and Mrs. Miller were chatting away and little sis started playing the bongos on mom’s bum. As in let’s get out of here or I’ll keep hitting your rear. Right, left, right, left. Up, down, all around. She was probably 3 or 4 at the time, and I’m not sure if she made mom move faster, but it was about as embarrassing to my mother as the time she went to leave a parent-teacher conference and walked into the closet. For her sake, I hope it wasn’t the same visit. Anyhow the article’s on loving your post-baby bod, jiggly butt and all.
Here’s an excerpt: “Set goals you can accomplish (“Take a brisk walk with the baby this week”), instead of ones that doom you to failure (“Get back to my college weight by my class reunion”).”
That article is from Babytalk/Parenting, which has a whole 12-week get your body back plan. It comes with a newsletter you have to register for and more.
And here’s something else from Parenting magazine proven that’s right PROVEN, couldn’t help it, strategies for moms. They’re actually pretty cool.

Lead-off mom
In case you missed it the New York Times Magazine had a beautiful slide show of tennis’ female stars. In the lead-off spot? Kim Clijsters, the Belgian who briefly walked away from tennis to focus on starting a family.
And speaking of athlete moms, Kerri Walsh, beach volleyball superstar, has a blog. Her kids are 3 months and 15 months. Check it out.
Minty fresh
Arkie Mama did a nice round up on summer drinks recently. It’s still hot as the blazes, so here’s a lighter Mojito recipe I found on YumSugar. Mint grows crazy fast and doesn’t need much attention so consider planting mint if you haven’t already. We keep it potted so it doesn’t take over the yard. Although, it’d be nice to have something in the yard.
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 lime
3 sprigs mint
1.5 ounces light run
soda water
Put sugar in a highball, squeeze in lime juice from 1/2 lime and toss in the lime.
Add mint and muddle. Add light rum and ice, fill with chilled soda water.
Bottoms up.

Northwest runners — listen up
An informational meeting is set for Thursday for residents in Northwest Arkansas who want to train for the Little Rock Marathon. The meeting is at 6 p.m. (Aug. 26) in the Newport Business Resource Center (Chamber and NEDC Building) at 201 Hazel Street in Downtown Newport, according to a press release.
Not ready to go the full distance — well that’s what training’s for — but there’s also a half marathon (13.1 miles), relay marathon (six miles and change), and a 5K. Schedules are available on the training section of the website.
Here’s more from the release:
Sheridan Cole of Newport will lead the weekly group training. Tom Singleton, Head Running Coach of the Little Rock Marathon Training Program, and Hobbit Singleton, Head Walking Coach of the Little Rock Marathon Training Program will be at the meeting to give an overview of the training program and answer questions.
“Our training program is really a year-round program,” said Tom Singleton, Head Running Coach of the Little Rock Marathon Training Program.
The build up begins in late August and will last six weeks. The official schedule for the marathon begins October 3 and finishes on marathon day.
Official training groups are now being formed across the state.
For more information about the training program or the meeting email scole@mandpbank.com or visit www.littlerockmarathon.com.

Run baby run
In case you missed this story — cute and ugh-inspiring. It’s about two running stars training together while pregnant. Yes, it includes that fabulous record-holder Paula Radcliffe, who won the New York marathon 10 months after getting birth. Here’s an update from an NYT blog.
And one more thing — some tips on running while pregnant from the New York Road Runners. Why do it? Well there’s a benefit to your baby — a stronger heart rate AND you, shorter labor, according to the article.

“Eat nothing” … seriously?
Maybe I’m taking this out of context. Maybe Bethenney Frankel, the gorgeous natural food chef who can call herself a “skinny girl” without any sense of irony, meant this differently than it came out. How did she get her body back so quickly after childbirth? She has this mantra, she told Life & Style magazine. “Taste everything, eat nothing.”
What does that even mean? Sure if you’re a chef you may literally be able to taste all sorts of good, healthy foods, grazing yourself through a day. But guess what — most new moms aren’t. And their husbands probably aren’t either. They’re lucky to slap together a grilled cheese while catching what … four hours of sleep a night?
And no matter what BF meant, too many women probably just heard the last bit of that quote — eat nothing. So not cool. (I have faith you new moms are smarter than that.)
New moms need to eat, and if they’re nursing they sometimes need to eat a lot. That doesn’t mean fat bombs or fast food. My friend who just had her second child remembers her doctor telling her early on in her first pregnancy she needed to eat lots of healthy foods. “Your baby needs spinach, not a cheeseburger.”
Sure you want to lose the baby weight. But you need your energy, whether of not you’re nursing. So do yourselves a favor, eat something — healthy.
And when you’re ready to workout BF does have a new workout video. (I reviewed it awhile back.) Go ahead pop it in and push the mute button.

Fawntastic
One of my favorite fit moms, Fawn Rechkemmer, has a cool post I’ve been meaning to reference for a bit. It’s a list of places to keep the kids cool without going stir crazy. I know it’s so lazy of me to let her do all the work, but her list of INDOOR playgrounds and other activities is just too good not to pass on.
Don’t know Fawn? She’s a runner, Little Rock mom of two, writer and pretty much all-around cool chick. And her picture’s on the website of a book I reviewed a bit ago called Run Like a Mother. She’s under F as in “Fast, fit mom.”
